Design For ... LEED

"LEED" stands for “Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design” developed by the U.S. Green Building Council. LEED is the international benchmark for the design, construction and operation of high-performance “green” and sustainable buildings, both commercial and residential.

When striving for LEED certification, the entire project, including its landscape, is considered. Points are earned for meeting various criteria in five areas of human and environmental health: sustainable site development, water efficiency, energy & atmosphere, materials selection, and indoor environmental quality. The total number of points awarded earns LEED certification in one of four levels: certified, silver, gold, or platinum. Although not every LEED building is completely sustainable, this system offers a means for recognizing the steps to get there.

In most cases, these projects cost no more than if conventional methods were used. Better yet, these projects can greatly reduce operating costs, significantly reduce waste going to landfill, conserve energy and water, reduce harmful greenhouse gas emissions, are healthier and safer for people, pets, and wildlife, and increase property value. Aesthetically and functionally, your home and garden can be a “green” jewel.

Considering a commercial or residential project of your own? These types of projects can qualify for tax rebates, zoning allowances and other incentives. For more information about eco-friendly landscape design and construction, contact us and visit www.usgbc.org.
